Cosmology in Brans-Dicke theory with a scalar potential

چکیده

We consider the general behaviour of cosmologies in Brans-Dicke theory where the dilaton is self-interacting via a potential V (Φ). We show that the general radiation universe is a two-dimensional dynamical system whereas the dust or false vacuum universe is threedimensional. This is in contrast to the non-interacting dilaton which has uniformly a two-dimensional phase space. We find the phase spaces in each case and the general behaviour of the cosmologies. Pauli (or Einstein) frame is used to study the Brans-Dicke gravity theory, minimally coupled with dilatonic Brans-Dicke scalar field, whose solutions involve degenerate metrics. Some of these solutions exhibit transitions from an Euclidean domain to a Lorentzian space-time corresponding to a spatially flat Robertson-Walker cosmology.

In the context of Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation, the cosmological Friedmann equation which relates the expansion rate H of the universe to the various fractions of energy density is analyzed rigorously. It is shown that Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation brings a negligible correction to the matter density component of Friedmann equation. Besides, in addition to Ω...

A Possible Solution to the Horizon Problem: the Mad Era for Massless Scalar Theories of Gravity

Extensions of Einstein gravity which allow the gravitational constant G to change with time as the universe evolves may provide a resolution to the horizon problem without invoking a period of vacuum domination and without the subsequent entropy violation. In a cosmology for which the gravitational constant is not in fact constant, the universe may be older at a given temperature than in a stan...

Primordial and asymptotic inflation in Brans-Dicke cosmology

We show that rapid primordial inflation and slow asymptotic inflation is a natural consequence of Brans-Dicke theory. The ratio of the two inflation parameters is proportional to the square root of the Brans-Dicke parameter ω (ω ≫ 1). We also calculate the Hubble parameter H and the time variation of the time dependent Newtonian gravitational constant G for both regimes. The variation of the Hu...

Conformal Relativity versus Brans-Dicke and Superstring Theories

We show how conformal relativity is related to Brans–Dicke theory and to low-energy-effective superstring theory. Conformal relativity or the Hoyle–Narlikar theory is invariant with respect to conformal transformations of the metric. We show that the conformal relativity action is equivalent to the transformed Brans–Dicke action for ω = −3/2 (which is the border between standard scalar field an...
